Short Hair Styles

Getting a short hair cut can be very scary, especially if you have never had short hair before.  I remember when I was in 7th grade and had very long-middle of my back-hair and I decided that I just had to get a cute short hair cut--back then it was the Dorothy Hamill look.

Boy was I very disappointed.  It wasn't that the hair style looked bad or anything.  It was the fact that I was very comfortable with my long hair and it was almost a sort of security blanket.  And when I cut it all off, that security was gone.

It took awhile to get used to the fact that I had short hair.  I wasn't very good at styling it, so on some days it didn't look all that great. 

The moral to the story is, don't do anything drastic to your hair or you may not like it or be totally disappointed.

Now, I won't go any shorter with my hair length than my shoulders, even though I see all these great new short styles that I like.  I always take in a picture of a short hair style that I really like and just ask the stylist to do the same hair cut, except shoulder length.

Medium length hair styles

 Sienna Miller Medium Hair Styles

Sienna Miller is wearing a medium length curly hair style that will work great for a summer look.

It is short enough so that you can keep cool, yet long enough to create a distinct look.

Add soft waves throughout by using several different curling irons.  If you are skilled, you may be able to use a flat iron to create curls all over.

This type of hair style will work for casual and formal events.  You can dress it up by adding decorative hair barrettes or earrings, as Sienna has done.

Short hair style ideas

The search online for short hair styles is on.  When you have short hair, the cut must be just right or it won't look right.

Check out this short cut from Lisa Rinna.  It features long, choppy layers combined with longer side-swept bangs.

Lisa's hair is styled with all the layers flipping out on the ends.  This will probably require some serious hair products to keep it in place.

Notice that she has many highlights and lowlights scattered throughout her hair for a dimensional look.

Types of bangs

There are different kinds of bangs that you can add to make a totally different change to your hair style.  Below are some examples.

This is the full bang, eyebrow length.  It starts deep in the crown area and covers the face from ear to ear.



 These are not really bangs.  you can create this look by parting your hair deep on one side.  Then just drape part of your hair from one side to the other.  Extra hold hair spray might be needed to keep these bangs in place. 



Short, choppy bangs are the current trendy bang.  There is not a defined line.  These can be cut very short or very long, depending on your style.
